Customer Success: Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMC) engages in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration, operation, and support of technology systems, products, and services in the United States and internationally. It operates in five segments: Aeronautics, Electronic Systems, Space Systems, Integrated Systems and Solutions (ISS), and Information and Technology Services (ITS).

Aeronautics segment produces military aircrafts, including the F-16 multirole fighter; F/A-22 air dominance, attack, and combat aircraft; F-35 Joint Strike Fighter; C-130J tactical airlift aircraft; C-5 airlift aircraft; and the F-117 stealth fighter.

Lockheed Martin needed a data accumulation and reporting system to handle contractor revenue information by state and congressional district for each of their Aviation Systems programs. The system needed to import a dataset into the application and organize/classify the data for use.

To this end, Lockheed Martin needed a reporting and querying system to deliver flexible reports generated based on a configurable query analytics tool. The company approached Democracy Data (DDC) who is the leading provider of public affairs services and solutions. DDC then worked in close conjunction with BND Software and InfoMile to develop the application in the .NET environment. BND/InfoMile created various modules and functions within the application.

An Import function was developed to handle the upload of information in a pre-determined format into the application. The dataset was scoured and de-duped to ensure the accuracy of the information. All data passed through a set of validity tests; any items that did not pass the validation rules ran through an automated matching process. If the data still failed the validation process then it was placed within a quarantine section of the application and was not available as active data for use by the reporting tool.

A robust Query Tool and Reporting engine was also developed to allow Lockheed Martin the ability to create flexible reports from the active dataset. The Query and Reporting tool allows authorized Lockheed Martin employees to create custom reports on active data by utilizing a report creation wizard. These reports are made available in HTML, PDF, and Excel formats in order to handle possible informational needs of Lockheed Martin Washington Operations. The tool also helps configure the ratios and formulae that are used for extrapolating results based upon the dataset. Based on the primary input dataset and a defined rules set, the application would calculate results. Due to the assumptive nature of both some of the input data and the calculations, the rules set would need to be easily customizable to allow adjustments by authorized Lockheed Martin users.

The application handles information set for programs that are currently under contract, as well as programs that are currently in negotiation/bidding. The system reports on records of data, which are considered assumptive but also handle divergent datasets. Although each program within Lockheed Martin has a certain percentage of common data fields, there is still a certain amount of information that diverges from the norm. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a mechanism to create and report on custom information fields.
